OpenClaw Creator Joins OpenAI — OpenClaw Becomes a Foundation
Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw, is joining OpenAI to bring agents to everyone. OpenClaw will move to an independent foundation structure, ensuring its open-source future. Here's what this means for the community.
Big News for OpenClaw
Peter Steinberger — the creator of OpenClaw and the driving force behind the project — has announced that he’s joining OpenAI. At the same time, OpenClaw will transition to an independent foundation structure, ensuring the project remains open source, community-driven, and model-agnostic.
This is massive news — and it’s overwhelmingly positive for everyone in the OpenClaw ecosystem.
Why OpenAI?
Peter’s mission has always been to build an AI agent that anyone can use — even his mum. To push that vision forward, he needs access to the latest models and cutting-edge research. After spending a week in San Francisco talking with major AI labs, the path led to OpenAI.
OpenAI already sponsors OpenClaw and has committed to continuing that support. But this isn’t about OpenClaw becoming an “OpenAI product” — far from it.
OpenClaw Stays Independent
The move to a foundation structure is the key detail here. OpenClaw will continue to:
- Support multiple models — Claude, GPT, Gemini, local models, and more
- Remain fully open source
- Be governed independently from any single company
- Welcome contributions from the entire community
Peter described the OpenClaw community as “something magical,” and the foundation model is designed to protect exactly that. No single company will control OpenClaw’s direction.
What This Means for You
If you’re learning OpenClaw or already building with it, this is validation on a huge scale. The project isn’t going anywhere — it’s getting more resources, more independence, and more reason to invest your time in it.
Having OpenClaw’s creator working inside one of the world’s leading AI labs means better integrations, faster innovation, and a direct line between the community’s needs and frontier AI research. And the foundation structure guarantees that OpenClaw remains yours — not locked into any vendor’s ecosystem.
The Claw Is the Law 🦞
Peter’s famous sign-off says it all. OpenClaw’s future has never looked brighter.
